Study findings presented by Yasuyuki Suzuki, MD from Jikei University and Hoshi General Hospital, Tokyo, Japan showed that Vitamin D "may" be as effective as estrogen in preventing bone loss in men using LHRH. It does not have the "side" effects that estrogen use does.
LHRH has been shown to cause osteoporosis and estrogen can prevent that. This study showed that of 71 men between the ages of 63 and 95, the 31 who got Vitamin D supplementation had maintained bone density while those without had a loss.
There was no increase shown-Vitamin D did not cause low bone mineral density to increase to normal levels.
The Vitamin D analogue used was Alfacalcidol at doeses of 1mg/day.
Ann's NOTE: The regularly recommended daily dose for Vitamin D is 400IU. I am NOT sure how to compare this.
