Update from the PBCN, February 2002

Dear All & Everyone:

The PBCN is presently engaged in 3 fronts in the war against breast cancer: Prevention, Treatment & Eradication. Within a 15-month period ending December 2001, following are the status of these arenas of engagement with the enemy after it had taken away the life of Rosa on 23 September 2000.

Prevention – For women not yet afflicted

1. The 3rd Philippine Conference on Breast Cancer was held on 11-12 November 2000 at Miriam College, in Loyola Heights, Quezon City.

2. The PBCN has been able to maintain a Breast Cancer Resource Center with a staff and a service vehicle, thanks to funds raised from the ABS-CBN Telethon.

3. The PBCN conducted a total of 40 symposiums nationwide with a total of 2,890 participants. Thirteen (13) were done outside the NCR with an average of 87 participants while the majority of 27 were done within the NCR with an average of 65 participants per symposium. The environmental link to the disease has made many aware and conscious of the avoidable risk factors.

Treatment – For women already afflicted

1. The PBCN conducted twenty two (22) “How to Confront Breast Cancer” orientation days with a total of 208 women suffering from the disease that have empowered them to become breast cancer warriors..

2. As a safer and more reliable alternative to mammography, the PBCN has been able to submit a total of 68 women to Thermal Imaging, thus allowing them to avoid the risks of a WWII vintage technology.

3. The PBCN visited 30 WBC's (women with breast cancer) in their residences as a prelude to a Breast Cancer Home Care Program.

4. Of more than six areas outside the NCR that have been offered to the PBCN , none have yet been deemed close to an ideal place for the setting up of a Breast Recovery Center. It is still hoped that the ideal site is just around the corner.

Eradication – For women still to be born

1. PBCN’s Danny Meneses travelled to the USA from April-June 2001 and personally followed up the linkages his late wife, Rosa had initiated from the West Coast to the East Coast. The PBCN participated in the Annual Advocacy Training Conference commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the U.S. National Breast Cancer Coalition from May 5-9, 2001 in Washington, D.C.

2. A few weeks before Rosa's 1st Death Anniversary, the PBCN launched its campaign "Kalayaan mula sa Breast Cancer" with the release of a poster made possible by the Ford Foundation.

3. On the12th of November 2001, the PBCN participated in the first of a series of meetings on breast cancer of the Committee on Health of the Philippine House of Representatives. The PBCN has been asked by the Chairperson to submit a draft for a possible Philippine Breast Cancer Act.

4. The 2nd ABS-CBN Breast Cancer Telethon was held on November 23rd, 2001 and although only a fraction of the amount raised the previous year was pledged, the impact of the PBCN's level of advocacy has drastically changed the landscape of breast cancer in the Philippines.

HELP PBCN Many have gone ahead while many more are becoming victims of this unacceptable epidemic. Much more needs to be done and every single effort will go a long, long way. There is now a ground swelling of volunteers and supporters who’d like to make a difference and a HELP PBCN Listing has now been created.
