Although you are intimately involved in the area of Breast Ca you may not be aware of the breakthrough technology of PDT.
My wife Maggie was diagnosed with intraductal invasive breast ca over three years ago, and we have been like you on a quest for some answers that are 'non-toxic yet effective'. She has had only a biopsy diagnosis (without a clear margin) but has had no chemo, radiation, mastectomy, lymphnode dissection, etc.
We have used PDT, Evista and Herceptin and she is doing very well with no evidence of tumor. We began with the PDT approx. 2 years ago with the available agent 'Photofrin' which is approved in the states. We found this to be 'disappointing and in all have tried a total of 8 agents.
We now thankfully have a remarkable agent and are obtaining very impressive results with most types of cancers. The photosensitive period is only 24-48 hours and the side effects are essentially nil using our method.
A book is being written about this which will come out in the fall and I can tell you where to obtain it if you wish.
We are also in the process of applying simultaneously for medicines approval and a clinical trials exemption in the UK.
These are some more images which show the selective nature of the treatment on superficial skin tumors. As you can the see the treatment is highly selective and the surrounding normal tissue is spared with excellent cosmetic result. Our agent has a selectivity of 36/1 which is to say that 36 times as much agent accumulates on cancer cells as normal cells. It is also not 'hydrophobic' as are most of the other 2nd. generation agents. You might look at http://www.photocure.com/ for some information of the mechanisms of treatment in general but the agent there is a very poor agent for systemic use.
