Broad Beans and Colon Cancer:

An article in the May 1999 issue of "Gut", a journal discusses the disease-resistant protein Vicia faba aggulatinin which may contribute to protection from colorectal cancer through effects on tumor development.

Cells behaved more normally when placed into contact with this protein. It is part of a family of dietary lectins, plant proteins that are said to remain "largely intact" as they pass through the gut. This same team of scientists found that a dietary lectin in mushrooms-Agaricus bisohorus also displayed anti-cancer activity Dr.M. Jordinson et al Hammersmith Hospital London, UK.

NOTE: See the section on mushrooms for more on lectins.

"Dietary Modulation of Omega 3/Omega 6 Polyunsatruated Fatty Acid Ratios in Patients with Breast Cancer" Dilprit Bagga, Stefani Capone, John Glaspy, MD(contact him at 200 Medical Plaza Ste 120-64, University of Ca at Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA 90095-6956)

From the conclusion: "...dietary intervention could provide an effective means to alter the fatty acid availability in tumor tissue and thereby possibly affect tumor growth. ...it is possible to alter the Omega3/Omega 6 ratio and ...it could have important implications for chemoprevention of breast cancer.

NOTE: Chemoprevention refers to the study of natural substances

6/99 A recent article in Discover Magazine spoke about the discovery of a protein substance in human mother's milk that may cause cancer cells to die. It is called alpha-lactalbumin (alpha-lac). It also eliminates pneumococcus bacteria.

The Swedish team that identified this protein are now calling it "Human Alpha-lactalbumin Made Lethal to Tumor cells (HAMLET). It is now being tested on animals, after being tried on many different types of cancer cells in the laboratory. I keep receiving articles in the mail about lactoferrin and am wondering if this is the same substance.

Protection from colon cancer through nutrition

A panel of experts met recently and stated that including 30 grams of fiber in the diet would help. This panel suggested most of the fiber come from wheat. Gluten-free sources (for people with allergies/sensitivities) would include: rice, millet, buckwheat, kamut or quinoa.

From European Journal of Cancer: High intake of vegetables (at least 5 per day) seems to offer a protective effect.

Studies in the South African Journal of Medicine 1997;87:152-8 show that the population with the highest dietary fish consumption had significantly less colorectal cancer.

Laboratory experiments with rats have shown that diets rich in Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids significantly reduce the number of colon tumors. By contrast, corn oil will feed tumors. This has been demonstrated in human volunteers also.

Folic Acid, Vitamin E, Selenium and Vitamin C have all (separately) been shown to offer a protective benefit. Various studies, Cancer Res, J Natl Cancer Inst, Cancer etc.

Exercise three to four times a week combined with a healthy diet rich in fiber and folate has been shown to reduce risk of colon cancer. Am J Epidemiology 1998;148:4-16.

Please remember that eating WHOLE FOODS is a lot better than any other method to get the protection foods offer. Juice if you need more nutrients.
