UN TASK FORCE ADOPTS GUIDELINES FOR BIOTECH FOOD
A U.N. task force has agreed on general guidelines on safety precautions for foods derived from biotechnology. The Codex Intergovernmental Task Force on Foods Derived from Biotechnology decided that all foods made using biotechnology should be subject to pre-marketing safety assessments, and countries should be allowed to trace the food to help them conduct risk management.
The decision at least partially vindicates the decision of the European Union to introduce a system for tracing foods.
The guidelines are voluntary, but if adopted by the World Trade Organization and other international bodies they will likely carry significant weight. Such food is a concern for people with food allergies because they have not been tested or regulated, and most countries do not require that they be labeled.
