Two Studies Raise Concern on GE Foods

During the past month, 10/05, two international scientific studies were released that both raise a lot of concern about the long-term safety of eating genetically engineered foods.

THE RUSSIAN STUDY

The first study from Russia found that 55.6 percent of the offspring of female rats fed genetically engineered soy flour died within three weeks.

While this study was not peer reviewed, the board of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine has called on the National Institutes of Health to immediately replicate the research.

We agree. This is a real smoking gun and more research must be done. The UPI article on this study is posted below titled "High mortality rats ate GM food."

THE AUSTRALIAN STUDY

Last week the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) reported that mice feed genetically engineered peas developed inflammation of the lungs

. This announcement came after a decade-long project to bring these biotech peas to market.

The rats apparently had an allergic reaction to the genetically modified protein contained in the peas.

The scientist acting as the spokesperson for CSIRO on this report tried to put a positive spin on the results by saying this is proof the regulatory system works.

However, what the study really shows is that there is an essential need for each and every biotech food to be thoroughly tested.

This study should be of particular concern to Americans who are eating genetically engineered crops nearly every day. There have not been adequate studies done on the current genetically engineered foods.

What percentage of people in the United States may be having low to moderate allergic reactions to the genetically engineered food they are currently eating?
