SABCS: Tamoxifen, Raloxifene Show Preclinical Cross-resistance

[12/13/2001; Doctor's Guide]

SAN ANTONIO, TX -- December 12, 2001 --

Animal and in vitro studies showing tamoxifen to be cross-resistant with raloxifene suggest that oncologists may find themselves limited in their choices of hormonal therapy for women with breast cancer. Tamoxifen may be ineffective in the treatment of breast cancer in women previously treated for osteoporosis with the selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), raloxifene, researchers say.

"Our results may have important clinical relevance since tamoxifen may not be a suitable treatment for women following exposure to raloxifene," said Hong Liu, MD, PhD, Research Assistant Professor in the laboratory of Dr. V.C. Jordan at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Liu presented her data yesterday (Dec. 11) at the 24th annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, in San Antonio, Texas.
