Sunita's story about Mom's Treatment for Ovarian Cancer

Sent by email October 6, 2008

Dear friends at Annie Appleseed,

My mother who has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer is currently having treatment at Klinik St george in germany, I would just like to give you first hand experience of our treatment here so that people can make an informed decision.

There are huge plus points for this clinic, it is truly an integration of both conventional and alternative medicine. The doctors here are highly trained and they leave no stone untouched on the quest to getting their patients better; infusions of various supplements, hyperthermia, oxygen therpy, colonics, Iscador treatments, etc.

They almost always insist on using low-dosage chemo inorder to reduce tumour burden, however unlike the UK the dosage is low so that there is no major assault on the immune system or the person!!!!

Some Uk oncologists would argue the dose is too low and ineffective, however, the chemo is combined with hyperthermia which potentiates the chemo, improves its absorption and makes the cancer cells more permeable to the drugs.

My mother has had minimal side-effects, consisting of nausea and fatigue. Hairloss is still very rare and depends on how your general health is and how much chemo you have had before.

Everyday a team of doctors come round to assess you and answer any of your questions. You always feel that you are being closely monitored and in the hands of competent doctors who treat you as a whole person not just a cancer patient. Every element of your health and well-being is important.

To address some of the previous negative points; the food has improved at the clinic, a new catering team have been employed and are making good wholesome food. They DO warn you of the possible side-effects including hairloss (rare), nausea, etc.

After leaving the clinic you will be asked to go home and do some tests to see how you have responded to the treatments, depending on the results you may be asked to come back. At some points most patients are asked to come back for 1-2. weeks.

The negative points include; the cost, the clinic has no CT or Pet scans (they do have ultrascans and use blood tests regularly, you dont see enough of Dr Douwes, family/friends of the patient are not warned of how bad the patient looks after wholebody hyperthermia!!! dont worry it is normal for them to look like they have been in a boxing match...thus will only last a day or so.

Important tips would include; if nurses find it difficult to find your veins ask the doctors to put in a central line as soon as you get there, saves unnecessary pain and time. If you are generally well you may be able to be treated as an outpatient and save money, you need to ask the doctors about this before you get to the clinic

Best wishes,

Sunita
