Some Advice for Kids with 'Tummy Trouble'

From an article in Natural Awakenings, March 2006 written by Victoria Dolby Toews.

High-sugar juices (containing sorbitol) may trigger an upset stomach leading to gas pains and diarrhea among children under 5 years of age.

Antibiotics can trigger the runs.

Yogurt is one "traditional and convenient way to replenish beneficial intestinal tract bacteria" Try to find those with 'active cultures' on the label - there are also probiotic supplements for children available at healthfood stores.

"Rice water is the most common world-wide remedy for diarrhea and is approved by the World Health Organization. There appears to be a chemical in rice that slows down diarrhea; rice water also replenishes electrolytes and sugars".

"Cook brown rice or cream of rice cereal with twice the usual amount of water, then serve the cooled, drained water or the watery cereal to the affected child".

Carob is also a safe, natural remedy for diarrhea - its constituents help bind together watery stools. Mix one teaspoon of carobl powder into applesauce or yogurth for the child to eat. (source: Linda B. White, MD and Sunny Mavor, co-authors of Kids, Herbs, and Health Interweave Press, 1999)
