JNCI (Journal of the National Cancer Institute)90:1219-24 Yoshizawa, K et al 1998
Using a case-control design (comparing 181 men with advanced prostate cancer to 181 men without cancer, they measured selenium in the toenails. After adjusting for other factors, the researchers found that men with the highest level of selenium had a 65% lower chance of developing advanced prostate cancer than those with the lowest level of selenium.
Good sources of selenium are whole grains and seeds but is dependent on the selenium content of the soil.
Ann's NOTE: It is said that the Northeast U.S. is particularly deficient in selenium in the soil.
7/01 NCI has a prevention study using selenium and vitamin E. Ask your doctor about the SELECT Trial. For more information, see our section on Clinical Trials
