Salt Water May Save Breasts

Salt water may save breasts

Norwegian research at the Telemark Hospital has unveiled a potential breakthrough treatment method, using salt water to save the breasts of three out of four breast cancer patients, newspaper Dagsavisen reports.

Chief physician Ivar Guldvog claims to have discovered a new method of treatment that can save many patients traumatic breast loss after cancer, and statistics indicate that the chances of saving the breast rises to 90 percent if the cancer is detected early enough.

The study of 300 patients treated with the new method reveals three out of four do not lose their breast after cancer surgery, compared to one out of four using older techniques.

The findings were presented Tuesday at an international conference of specialists in Sandefjord.

"Patients have salt water implanted in the breast after the tumor is removed, so that the shape of the breast is maintained. In time the water is converted to tissue that replaces what has been removed," Guldvog said.

"No hospital, either in Norway or Europe, can point to the results achieved by Guldvog," said Professor Steinar Thoresen of the Cancer Registry of Norway.
