Liver cancer induced by hepatitis C viral infection has been increased in Asia as well as in America, and thus, it is important to develop the effective methods for its prevention. We have reported previously that liver cartinogenesis in mice has been suppressed by oral administration of natural carotenoids, such as lycopene and alpha-carotene.
In the present study, we have acessed the potency of these natural carotenoids to prevent liver carcinogenesis in human. Mixture of lycopene, beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, phytoene, phytofluene, and other trace amounts of natural carotenoids plus vitamin E was used in this clinical trial.
After 5 years, we have found that the development of hepatoma was significantly suppressed in the carotenoids treated group; i.e., more than 50% of reduction was observed in the group administrated with the mixture of carotenoids. Thus, it seems to be valuable to treat the high risk group of liver cancer with the mixture of natural carotenoids and vitamin E.
