This statement is misleading since there has never been a study that compares
SURVIVAL time in those people who people who choose chemo/rads with those who
don't. It doesn't factor in iatrogenic ( treatment-caused) death and disease.
There has never been a double-blind study either. The 3% of breast cancer pts
who supposedly have better survival after chemo are a subset of people we
cannot yet identify. If identifying those who can be helped, please send me
the evidence. (Docs admit radiation does nothing for survival.) I have tried
to find out how they arrived at this 3% chemo statistic for years. A placebo
response would be larger than this.
When talking to doctors or reading studies, watch out for the phrases " x %
response" and "disease-free survival time." Having your tumor shrink or
getting fewer recurrences do not necessarily add up to increased survival.
"Is there any evidence this treatment will increase my survival time?" is the
first question to ask. Do not leave the office without an answer and studies
to back it up.
