You make it sound like you shine a green light on the prostate
tissue for a while and all your problems go away. That is TERRIBLY
misleading.
In actuality the powerful green laser is used to vaporize
tissue which is flushed out by liquid pumped through the area as the
tissue is vaporized. The process is viewed by the surgeon through a
scope, and the tool must be guided very skillfully as the laser is
indiscriminate - it blasts away anything in its path, cancerous
tissue, vital blood vessels, or critical organs. Think of it as a
substitute for a very powerful scalpel.
Since the whole process is
accomplished through a thin probe which is inserted through the
urethra it must be performed under sterile operating conditions and
requires great technical support.
This is a surgical procedure done in a hospital under general anesthetic so there is dietary preparation for surgery, mostly related to requirements of the anesthesia, careful consideration of the patient's medical history to determine that the patient is a proper candidate for this procedure, full post-operative monitoring for a few hours, then follow up to be sure urination has begun properly, etc. which can easily take a month.
