ABSTRACT: Evaluation of outcome after breast conservation therapy
(BCT) in patients with stage I and II tubular, mucinous and medullary
breast carcinoma
Purpose/Objective: To evaluate the outcome of patients with
early-stage tubular, mucinous and medullary breast carcinoma
following BCT and to compare their results to those of patients
with infiltrating ductal carcinoma (IDC).
Conclusions: No significant difference in the pattern of failure
was found among the four histologic groups, although the analysis
was limited by small patient numbers. However, there was a higher,
although statistically nonsignificant, long-term rate of NED
survival in medullary, mucinous and tubular patients than in IDC
patients (60-64% vs 47%).
The lack of distant failure in the tubular
cohort coupled with a high rate of second malignancy or death from
other causes reinforces the observation that the tubular histology
confers a favorable breast cancer prognosis.
