Complications and Quality of Life: Prostate

From an article in USA Today, 5/11/04

"The quality of life for some prostate cancer survivors gets significantly worse over time in certain aspects, according to research presented to the American Urological Association".

1100 patients were followed for eight years (Michigan and Massachusetts).

Here are some of the problems over time:

Two years after treatment with external radiation, fewer than 1% of men reported urinary incontinence severe enough to require pads. After six years, that rate climbed to 3%. Men treated with radiation also reported more bowel problems later.

Among men who had radioactive implants, 5% had problems with urinary incontinence after two years, compared with 10% after six years. Men treated with implants experience more problems with frequent urination or burning while urinating, but these side effects decreased significantly over time.

These men also reported fewer bowel problems in later years.

Surgical patients reported no large changes in their quality of life over time.

As with other cancers, complications from surgery show up sooner than those from radiation or other therapies.
