Macrobiotic Lifestyle Modification as taught by
the Kushi Institute (Becket, Massachusetts)
The macrobiotic diet was popular by a series of books published in the U.S.
The following information comes from the article by Lawrence H. Kushi, Joan E. Cunningham, James R. Hebert, Robert H. Lerman, Elisa V. Bandera and Jane Teas, published in the November, 2001 J of Nutrition.
The first was in 1979 "Healing Miracles from Macrobiotics" which described the recovery of music professor, Dr. Jean Kohler, from pancreatic cancer.
"Recalled by Life: The Story of My Recovery from Cancer", was the autobiographical story of Dr. Anthony Sattilaro who was diagnosed at age 49 with prostate cancer with multiple bone metastases. Follow up at 1 year and 4 years after diagnosis revealed complete resolution of metastic bone lesions. Articles followed in Saturday Evening Post and Life magazine. (1982).
In 1983, Michio Kushi published "The Cancer Prevention Diet" (reissued in 1993)which detailed the macrobiotic approach to cancer.
Macrobiotic diet is a primarily vegetarian one, emphasizing the consumption of natural, minimally processed foods. It encompasses beans, sea vegetables, various pickles, whole grains, soy sauce, sea salt, miso, white-meat fish and a very small amount of eggs, poultry and red meat.
