Hello,
before I start, Iwant to say, that all, what is written by now, is only my privat own opinion!!!
I am working as a nurse in Dr. Douwes hospital.
I agree with Liz: Every story has as many sides as people are involved. Because everyone is creating his own reality. And this is the reason for many misunderstandings, if not everybody does speak about it.
So let me tell you my reality:
I am not angry, that Robert wants to criticize us. We try to see the situation with the eyes of the patients. But we are not sick. We can only change things, if they speak WITH us and not ABOUT us!
I am angry about Roberts way.
Robert says, he is an oncologic physician. He has not been with Robyn in St. Georg. He made diagnoses thousands of miles away, so it is written in his statements.
But especially he should know, it is very difficult to say anything about the following situation in cancer disease.
I saw people, who have had very good results after our treatment and suddenly it turns away.
But I saw as well people in a very poor situation- and they came back after months in a stable health.
Nobody of us has the right to say, there is nothing else to do," go at home".
There are people, they would pass away because of the hopeless around them.
If Robert would be informed about hyperthermia, he would know about the low dose of chemo, about a lot of hyperthermia-studies and -trials around the world.
He wrote, it was only her decision to fligh back to Germany. If we are so terrible without kindness and care, why Robin believed, maybe we can help her?
My question is, why did she travel, having an oncologic doctor in her own family?
A lot of patients know me. I love to be there, to fight, to trust or to pray together with my patients, to laugh and to cry. I saw a lot of tears, I did cry a lot of tears. We have to say "good by" so often, nevertime knowing, we come together again.
And I saw a lot of physician and nurses come and- a short time later go away. It is in every oncologic clinic the same( I did work in an other before): To treat cancerpatients is not the dream of the most of them. So it must be trained the staff again, often oncologic area is understaffed.
It is very helpfully for patients to have a companion(?) person here. Some of them are very worry watching every step we make. I understand it, for sure, but often it is not easy.
So I ask myself:
Why it is great to work there?
Why does Dr. Douwes work over 25 years on oncologic area?
Why he is one of the presidents of the "International society of hyperthermia"?
Why does ST. Georg live over ten years?
Why does Dr. Douwes fight for acceptance of WBH over so many years?
And the most important question:
Why do the most patients come after calling with "old" patients, which have been some times ago?
The relationship between staff and patients is very intensively and strongly. I see hope, pleasure and love in their eyes, when the hug me, when they are awaken after WBH, smiling and happy. And I know, I can give comfort holding the hand, speaking only with our eyes. The patients show me every day the gift health, life, kids and family! Thank you very much for your trust!
And this is, why we feel being on the right place, why we can stand the contradiction between life and death, between intimacy and distance!!!
I`m feeling with Robyn`s family, because I try to imagine, what would I do in this situation.
And I met her last year. She seems to me as a very strong lady, who wants to give up never time!
I wish me, that such letters will be written never time again, that people find a way to communicate together.
My warmest regards and love for everyone
Jana
PS: Please forgive me my mistakes, I am not perfect in English! But I hope, you can understand the sense of my words!
