Foods and Herbs That Work to Detoxify

Dandelion: An effective diuretic that has been used for kidney stones, and edema. It has the ability to cleanse the system of toxic matter. Do not use the seeds of flower stalk, otherwise everything is edible. You can juice the leaves or add to a salad (bitter taste if used alone). They are highest in nutrients in the fall. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Quote from Heinerman's Encyclopedia of Fruits, Vegetables and Herbs/John Heinerman, Parker Publishing, 1988

"DETOX WITH SWEET POTATOES Besides being a yummy source of beta-carotene, sweet potatoes and yams have an unusual health side effect: they can remove heavy metals from the body. In fact, doctors in the Soviet Union have prescribed a diet that's heavy on the spuds for factory workers continually exposed to toxic chemicals.

Sweet potatoes contain something called "phytochelatins". This helps them bind to harmful substances like copper, cadmium, mercury and lead which most of us are exposed to on a regular basis from air pollution. The phytochelatins help pass these toxins out of the body."
