From Nomi Shannon, The Raw Gourmet Newsletter, October, 2002
'Raw Food Guy' (a book) by Howard Fisher is a delightful romp with a
delightful man. Howard and I have not met in person, but over
the years have had many email and phone conversations. He is
from Ohio and has made an important impact on the local raw scene.
Howard tells his story in a fast reading and entertaining way,
complete with before and after pictures. He began an all raw
program in December of 1999. Howard was very heavy. He weighed 315.
In January of 2001 he weighed in at 175! A gourmet cook,
Howard turned his talents over to the raw side, and the over
30 recipes in this lovely book are all superlative.
Howard's book offers a great story and some terrific recipes,
but not any basic information. It is not for the reader who
doesn't understand what 2 cups of soaked pecans means,
because there are not instructions for how and why to soak nuts.
All that is in my book. This is a self-published 60 page book
with a wealth of terrific fun, original recipes-it is not a
high-gloss, illustrated cook or un-cook book.
I am more than impressed with Howard's recipes. For one thing,
they are truly original. This is something that I appreciate.
Wait until you taste his Bluto Burgers! Made from spinach,
mushrooms, onions and pecans with yummy seasonings,
these dehydrated patties are divine! Howard offers up some
real keepers, main courses you will want to make many
times such as hummous made from squash and tahini, tomato sauce,
dehydrated yummies, burgers, spreads, pates. And yes, some
fun desserts too.
Here is his recipe for "Halibut" Salad
(from The Adventures of Raw Food Guy, by Howard Fisher)
1 cup of pine nuts
1 cup of macadamia nuts
soaking water
1 cup chopped yellow onion
1/2 cup chopped purple onion
1 cup of chopped celery
1/2 cup fresh parsley
2 Tablespoons dulse flakes
sea salt to taste
Method: Soak the pine and macadamia nuts for 4-6 hours.
Drain and place in bowl of food processor with the S blade.
Process the nuts until they become pasty. Empty contents
of bowl into another dish. Cut the vegetables into workable
pieces for the processor and process until the pieces are small.
Blend the processed veggies with the nut mixture by hand and
chill for an hour. Serve with leaf wraps or chips.
Note from Nomi: You can use a Juicer with a blank or a K-Tec
or Vita Mix to prepare this recipe also.
Raw Food Guy is $15.00. You can buy it from me for the next
