Estriol May Reduce Risk

DOD-BCR: Pregnancy hormone estriol may reduce risk for breast cancer

ORLANDO, FL -- September 30, 2002 -- Women who have the highest level of estriol, an estrogen that is entirely of fetal origin, during pregnancy have a 58 percent lower risk for breast cancer than women who have the lowest serum estriol levels in pregnancy, according to data from a prospective study of estrogens during pregnancy.

The findings were presented September 26th at the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Meeting.

Pentii K. Siiteri, PhD of the Public Health Institute, Berkeley, California, said estriol can rise as much as 1000-fold during pregnancy but there are wide variances in serum concentrations.

The finding suggests that estriol might be an effective option for either breast cancer prevention or treatment regimens, said Dr. Sliiteri.
