Drinking the Rainbow by Steven Bailey, ND and Larry Trivieri, Jr.
In his book, The Rainbow Diet, Dr. Gabriel Cousins documents the importance of eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables of many colors, so as to receive a “rainbow” spectrum of nutrients that such a variety of fruits and vegetables contain.
By making juicing and smoothies a regular part of your diet, it is also possible to “drink the rainbow.” In preparing this chapter, Dr. Bailey decided to create a weekly smoothie recipe plan that would make “drinking the rainbow” easy and fun. When he shared his plan with his young daughter Shayla she suggested that she and her friends do a taste test of the smoothies Dr. Bailey had selected, and Dr. Bailey agreed.
The recipes below have all been “kid tested and approved.” They are also accompanied meditative practices you can explore each day that correspond to the energies associated with the color of each smoothie. Various, like-colored “super foods” are also included as add-ins that you can use to boost the nutritional value of each drink.
For best results, use organic fruits whenever possible.
Each recipe provides one to two servings.
Monday—The Color Red: Combine one cup of fresh, organic strawberries with ½-1 cup of cranberry juice. While fresh cranberry juice is preferred, you can use bottled, organic cranberry juice, as well as a splash of organic, white grape juice. Blend until smooth. As an additional option, you can also add one cup of pomegranate to this mixture.
Add-ins: cinnamon, wolfberries, hawthorn berries.
Meditative Practice: long walks, gardening, planting.
Tuesday—The Color Orange: Mix one cup of peaches and one cup of papayas with ½-1 cup orange juice. Blend until smooth. Mango can be substituted for papaya or included with it.
Add-ins: ginger, cardamom, and calendula flowers.
Meditative Practice: Nurturing activities with family, children, self-care.
Wednesday—The Color Yellow: Combine one banana, ½ cup pineapple, and ½-1 cup lemon juice sweetened with white grape juice or maple sugar. Blend until smooth. Other options include peaches, yellow grapes, and/or pineapple juice.
Add-ins: turmeric, dandelion flowers, flax seeds.
Meditative Practice: Good works, forgiveness.
Thursday—The Color Green: Combine one apple with 1-2 kiwis and blend with one cup of sweetened lime juice. Other fruits you can use are green grapes and organic green grape juice.
