Background: Malignant melanoma is the fifth and seventh most prevalent cancer among men and women, respectively. Given that there are few identified modifiable risk factors for melanoma, we investigated risks associated with dietary factors.

Methods: Incident cases of melanoma (n=502) were recruited from skin cancer clinics, and controls (n=565) from outpatient clinics.

Using logistic regression, odds ratios (ORs) for melanoma were computed for nutrient and alcohol intakes determined from a food frequency questionnaire that assessed dietary intake over the last year.

Results: There was a statistically significant (p0.05) reduction in risk for melanoma (ORs 0.64) among persons in high versus low quintiles of energy-adjusted vitamin C, a-carotene, b-carotene, lutein, and lycopene, which remained after adjustment for education, skin response to repeated sun exposure, and total number of dysplastic nevi.

Addition of micronutrients from supplements did not always add an additional reduction in risk, and if so, the risk decreased no more than 6%. High alcohol consumption (%kcals) was associated with an increased risk for melanoma, which remained after adjustment for confounders (OR (95% confidence interval) =1.82 (1.20, 2.78)).

Conclusions: Diets consisting of foods rich in vitamin C and carotenoids, and moderate in alcohol, may be associated with a reduction in risk for melanoma.
