Dietary advice for older persons

Recommended Grains (rice, noodles, bread, biscuits, pasta)

Adequate meat, egg and bean products

Large quantities of fruits and vegetables

Dairy products and high calcium foods

Plenty of water, soups, teas and fruit juices

Use steaming, quick frying and stewing methods for cooking

Have small meals frequently

Mince or dice the food and remove bones to assist chewing and swallowing

Wear suitably fitted dentures

Not recommended

Salty and preserved or pickled foods (e.g. salted eggs, salted fish, fermented soya beans, oyster sauce, smoked meats, fermented bean curd)

Foods with a high fat, high energy or high sugar content (e.g. pork belly, cream cakes)

High cholesterol foods (e.g. pig’s brain, cuttlefish)

Deep-fried foods

Large meals
