POT INGREDIENTS COULD BE USED IN DIET
Researchers are exploring the idea of using a cannabinoid system -- marijuana-based -- for appetite control and weight loss. The American Physiological Society says stimulation of appetite is one of the most commonly related effects of marijuana and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol -- the main active component -- has been reported to produce the urge to eat. The cannabinoids anandamide and 2-AG also stimulate feeding when administered to rats. SR141716, a potent and selective central cannabinoid receptor antagonist, has been used to investigate the role of receptors in appetite regulation. It is induced by the ingredients in marijuana. Studies show SR141716 produces changes in eating behavior, decreasing sucrose intake in rats, alcohol consumption in mice and sweet diet intake in marmosets while having little effect on bland food consumption. These results suggest blocking the central cannabinoid system may alter the rewarding value of foods and reduce eating.
