Blaming Breast Cancer on Abortion
THE ULTIMATE CONCLUSION FROM FEAR & IGNORANCE.
Several years ago a member of our support group was participating in a breast cancer chat-room on the Internet.
This electronic support group had been a source of information, education, comfort and support and she liked to start off each day with its wholesome and encouraging messages. Suddenly, the dialog was disrupted by a cruel and cryptic message – “All you women deserve breast cancer because you evil sinners have all had abortions!”
The message continued spewing forth fire and brimstone – horrified and sickened, she clicked her screen off …never visiting her chat-room again.
We spoke at length about what happened and how upsetting and insulting the experience had been. We were both puzzled by the crackpot message. We spoke about our profound respect for life. She had always advocated for pro-life; we dismissed the whole incident as the actions of a cruel and ignorant person.
Recently another member of our support group’s family was invited to a pro-life gathering. The topic was Abortion and Breast Cancer. The presentation linked women and abortion at a 50% rate.
No one challenged the material, or asked when the study was published (7 years ago) or if there were comparison studies (more than 30), nor was the ‘selection bias’ (procedures used to select subjects) questioned, or the population base from which the data was compiled (small and limited).
They didn’t inquire into any ‘misclassifications’ that may have compromised the findings. And so they didn’t have any idea if extraneous factors have resulted in errors with final conclusions (yes).
The material presented is old – and not good science. This study was limited to a small group of women, confined to a small regional area, and questions arose as to the accuracy of the survey answers. Some of the many factors the study neglects to address include; 1)
Breast cancer in America rose dramatically in the 1940’s, 30 years before abortion was legalized. 2) Women never having had any pregnancy are slightly more at risk for developing breast cancer. 3) And then there’s the question of men. 2% of all diagnosed breast cancer is in men! Should we conclude that 50% of men with breast cancer have had abortions?
It is a known fact that about 80% of all people die in bed. Study’s like this might conclude that we must now rid the world of beds!
Why, after 7 years, is this study being resurrected? The answer is simply – the propaganda of FEAR and IGNORANCE. This time the pro-life movement in promoting their political agenda is using it at the expense and emotional devastation of other pro-life women diagnosed with breast cancer. And blaming the diagnosed is a great way to instill a false sense of security for all those at risk
This trendy hypothesis rears its ugly head periodically - and is particularly cruel.
We must steady our focus on finding the real causes of breast cancer only then will we find a cure, and halt its march.
