Australia's first national breast cancer hotline aims to ease the trauma of those diagnosed with the disease. About 10,000 women are newly diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia each year, but until now there has been no telephone service to answer their concerns. The Director of the Wesley Breast Clinic, Dr Cherrell Hirst, says many women and their families go into shock after diagnosis and then need specific information. "The breast care nurses have been doing this through our support programs and through just taking information inquiries," she said. "They are experienced and they are able to particularly listen to the person calling, maybe a man, maybe a woman, and put that question in context and then answer it appropriately and give ongoing advice about where more help can be obtained."
