Ann Fonfa's Ltr to Cure Magazine

Dear Editor:

I am a cancer patient and advocate for those interested in CAM. We have an organization with a website devoted to education, information, awareness and advocacy. As you may know, studies continue to show very strong (as much as 80%) interest among people with cancer, family and friends on CAM.

With reference to several of the articles in your otherwise excellent magazine, I felt they could have benefited from some input on CAM. I think if you had some advocates on your editorial board they might have been able to point your writers in such a direction.

Q&A on Nausea & Chemotherapy, p13.

Dr. Grunberg could have mentioned studies done on acupuncture or the bracelets that use acupressure on a particular spot on the wrist. There was no mention of ginger nor medical marijuana. Non toxic ways to deal with unwanted/adverse(side [sic])effects .

In an otherwise excellent article on Sentinel Nodes, a concept I have supported since I first heard of it in 1996, while discussing lymphedema, you failed to provide any information for patients on the National Lymphedema Network (www.nln.org) which would have been extremely useful.

And in Mary Ellen Shepard, PhD's article on Smoking, there could have been mention of hypnosis or acupuncture, two recognized methods of fighting this addiction.

We hope you will look over our site, consider adding patient advocates to your staff and generally including information on CAM since patients have such a strong interest.

Thank you for your attention.
