Ann's Letter to the British J of Medicine

In response to this article:

WARD ROUND: Thomas Szasz The psychiatric protection order for the "battered mental patient" BMJ 2003; 327: 1449-1451 (December 2003)

Ann Fonfa wrote the following:

"As the president of The Annie Appleseed Project which provides information, education, advocacy and awareness for people with cancer on complementary, alternative (CAM), natural therapies, I write in support of patients' rights to make informed medical decisions.

This includes psychiatric patients. Looking at history, we know that so many of the so-called treatments not only did not work, but were often counter-productive, and could even be seen as punitive.

The treatments we have now will someday be viewed through history's lens and it may seem that they were wrongly given in some cases. Thus, it is every patient's right to pursue the specific therapy they are comfortable with.

We fully support that right. And further, we suggest that all medical doctors begin to study nutrition which we believe offers complementary value for any and all conditions."
