Antioxidant-Free Diet Slows Tumor Growth in Mice
Consuming less vitamin A and
vitamin E could slow the progression of an aggressive type of
breast cancer, according to findings from an animal study presented
here at Experimental Biology 2001. The vitamins may promote the
growth and spread of alveolar adenocarcinoma, which often spreads,
or metastasizes, beyond the breast to the lungs, according to
Dr. Craig Albright of the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill.
This type of cancer represents from 30% to 50% of all breast
cancer cases, Albright told Reuters Health. Vitamin A and vitamin
E are antioxidants, meaning they blunt the activity of free radicals,
molecules that are byproducts of the body's normal processes.
Because free radicals react strongly with many types of other
molecules, they can damage body tissues.
